Setting up your mailing list can be a daunting task if you’re new to email marketing. You put a lot of work into getting people to opt in, you craft a beautiful email to them and the last thing you want is for all that effort to miss the mark because your email is flagged as spam and ends up in some server’s junk mail folder.
Two of the most important steps to take are to ensure that your email address and sending domain are verified.
Verifying your email address means that you confirm that you are the owner of the email address from which you plan to send emails.
Verifying your sending domain means that you confirm that you are the owner of the domain from which you plan to send emails.
Why is this important? Verifying your email address and sending domain helps improve your email deliverability and reduces the likelihood of your emails being marked as spam. By doing this, you’re showing ISPs (internet service providers) that you’re a legitimate sender and not a spammer.
Mailchimp has some great help articles on how to do this:
Many people find that they are able to verify their email address, but they don’t have access to the domain records to do the second part of the process, the domain authentication. If that is the case, you need to talk to your hosting company or to the person who looks after your domain for you and ask them to help you out.
If you are using another mailing list provider, they will have a very similar process, so you should be able to find detailed instructions in their help files or they may guide you through it during the set up process.
It’s important to note that using free email providers like Gmail, Yahoo, or AOL to send email from any mailing list provider is not recommended. This is because these email addresses cannot be verified or authenticated (you don’t own the domain), which may stop your emails from being delivered.
